Message from Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin T. Catalina

Welcome to Suffolk County Police Department SHIELD, a member of the Global SHIELD Network. SCPD SHIELD was designed as a partnership program between the public/private sector and the Suffolk County Police Department. Its main purpose is to enhance crime prevention and counter-terrorism efforts here in Suffolk County.

Kevin T. Catalina is Suffolk County’s new police commissioner. The previous deputy police commissioner with the Suffolk County Police Department brings more than 33 years of law experience to his new role, 20 of those years of experience have been on the executive level.

“Commissioner Catalina is a man of honor and integrity and will serve as a tremendous leader of the men and women of the Suffolk County Police Department while serving as a steward to our communities,” Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine said.

“This is a dream come true. I am excited to utilize my more than 30 years of law enforcement experience and work alongside a knowledgeable and professional executive team to implement strategies to continue to drive down crime while building relationships with our residents through community policing efforts,” Catalina said.

OUR MISSION

Welcome to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Counter-Terrorism and Anti-Crime program, SCPD SHIELD. The Shield concept was created by the New York City Police Department and has now been adopted by the SCPD and a growing number of Law Enforcement agencies worldwide.
SCPD SHIELD fosters information sharing and awareness regarding national, regional and local criminal activity and counter-terrorism issues. SCPD SHIELD provides information regarding public safety alerts, crime pattern notifications, recommended responses, lessons learned and training opportunities.

WHAT WE DO

SCPD SHIELD keeps our private sector partners informed of developing situations in the County and region, including preparations for upcoming events and new intelligence and threat information.

FREE TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

The Homeland Security Section offers free security related seminars for businesses and organizations in Suffolk County. The following seminars can be scheduled by contacting the Homeland Security office:

Active Shooter - Seminars are individually designed for management, staff or general audiences. Seminars can be tailored to a time frame of 45 to 90 minutes in length and are designed to inspire discussion and offer suggestions for improvements in critical incident planning.
Bleeding Control Basic (B-Con) - Designed for civilians to learn how to recognize and control life-threatening bleeding associated with massive wounds before EMS arrives. This course is associated with DHS's national "Stop the Bleed" campaign. The course is delivered by SCPD's Medical Crisis Action Team (MEDCAT) and Stony Brook University Hospital Trauma Center.
Safety in the Sanctuary - Designed for houses of worship, our Active Shooter seminar is modified to meet unique challenges faced by religious centers.
Vulnerability Assessments - In an effort to promote public safety, the SCPD is offering to all residents and business owners a security survey or review of your security plans. This service is designed to help identify security issues in your home or business.
